Mike Donovan takes a long look at the years of President Harry Truman, from the end of World War II to the end-game days of the Korean War. A lot of this book is about the Korean War. The author is not a huge fan of Harry S Truman. In the great Truman vs. MacArthur debate, Mike sides with MacArthur, but not by a lot. He says that Mac went too far with nuclear war plans, and was disrespectful; but Truman asked a general to fight a war with his hands tied. For example, Mac gets roasted at the history alter for wanting to strike Chinese airfields, and Truman the wise restrained him. The truth is that the idea had been discussed and approved by the JCS and Truman approved it wholeheartedly. The British then objected because they had just established diplomatic relations with Communist China and, as part of the UN coalition in Korea, could not afford to go to war by accident against China. That was the only reason MacArthur's "expansion" of the war into China did not happen. It had nothing to do with Mac's arrogance. -- The opening segments in this book are the end days of WWII. There's plenty in here about the USUK occupation of Post-war Germany and the first Berlin Crisis. - The origins of the US Vietnam War are in here at the end, and they have solid ties to the Korean War. There's linkage there. - There aren't a lot of books that cover all the major events of the Truman Presidency. This one, written with passion and spirit, fills a need. It's edutainment.
